Kosovo Presidential Vote Fails, Snap Elections Loom

(MENAFN) Kosovo has been pushed toward snap elections after its parliament failed to choose a new president before the constitutional deadline of midnight Tuesday, due to insufficient votes to secure a majority.

Lawmakers were unable to reach the required two-thirds threshold in the 120-seat Assembly needed to elect a head of state. Only members of the ruling Self-Determination Movement and representatives of non-Serb minority communities took part in the vote, which was repeated four times during the day but still fell short with 64 votes.

Assembly Speaker and Acting President Albulena Haxhiu said opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo, had been invited to participate but declined to attend the sessions.

In the coming period, Haxhiu is expected to initiate procedures for early parliamentary elections, which Kosovo’s constitution requires to be held within 45 days.

The development signals a renewed period of political uncertainty, marking what would be the second election cycle in a short span following the December 28 vote.

The presidential vacancy follows the end of Vjosa Osmani’s term on April 4. Ahead of its conclusion, she had indicated interest in seeking another mandate, though the failure to secure a successor now leaves the country heading toward fresh national elections.
